DAMNATION

(02)

originated from Writer/Director Michael T. Capone growing up with the last name of history’s most infamous gangster, a movie-mad, fatherless Catholic in a decaying steel town awash in organized crime. One foundational memory was of playing at a friend's after school, rapelling on a rope from the roof of a bombed out building through broken windows. On the way home, they watched as a lanky, flamboyantly dressed man exited a stretch Cadillac, walked around and shot the driver in the face. Capone was seven years old.

The feature started as an ambitious short, produced at Wright State University while studying under Oscar winning documentarian Julia Reichert. The financial burden of completing a nearly hour long 16 Millimeter film back in the analog era resulted in the project going unfinished. The raw elements languished in storage for decades.

The pandemic sparked a desire to preserve the work. The elements were transferred by experts at Severin Films, doing the work in lieu of compensating Capone for Editing and Co-Producing TALES OF THE UNCANNY. After reassembling the short he attended the Sitges Film Festival where he met filmmaker Jake West, with whom he shared the short. West thought it held great potential.

Capone wrote a new script, folding in the originally shot material as flashbacks. He then set about producing the entirely self-funded enterprise. He convinced Scot Colford, who played the lead in the short, to reprise his role. As did supporting player Eric Purtle, who also allowed music from his band Minus One to be included. After an extensive search, Nina Pilar was found in Key West and cast as the antagonist. Jake West generously provided location sound and recommended Cinematographer Vince Knight who brought along his wife Karolina, who served as crew and also played a small role. The new material was shot over ten days in Delray Beach, Florida.
